New Music Central: Reuben Derrick Presents Duo Encounters

Ōtautahi artist Reuben Derrick presents improvisational duets. The concert will culminate in a double duo formation.

Mahina Ina Kingi Kaui (taonga pūoro, voice)

Mahina Ina Kingi Kaui is a talented recording artist, composer, an accomplished player and practitioner of Ngā Taonga Pūoro – Māori traditional instruments. She features on numerous projects and collaborations, nationally and internationally. Mahina has produced and co-produced many albums and was nominated as a finalist in the 2001 NZ Music Tui Awards, called ‘Dance With the Wind – Te Karakia’, Big Belly Woman. Her second album, ‘Dignity – Ko Tapu Au, Tu Rangatira’ was launched at Parihaka Peace Festival in 2007.

Justin DeHart (percussion)

From Sacramento, California, Justin DeHart is a GRAMMY-nominated performer of contemporary musical styles from classical to pop, and from world to electronic. He is a current member of Los Angeles Percussion Quartet (LAPQ) and his musical resume includes performances with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, LA Phil New Music Group, I.C.E., pipa master Wu Man, and various pop legends, including Stewart Copeland and Cheap Trick. Justin was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for percussion studies in India and his talents have been featured at concerts around the globe.

Reece McNaughten (percussion)

Reece McNaughten is one of Aotearoa's most sought after drummers. Aside from numerous high octane solo and small group projects (Big Flip The Massive, West Cost Bullies, Ballah Playah Gnah) he has toured and recorded with the likes of Bonaparte, Orchestra of Spheres and Grayson Gilmore.

Reuben Derrick (saxophone, clarinet)

Reuben is a saxophonist, clarinettist and composer whose work encompasses a vast range of collaboration with some of Aotearoa’s most exploratory songwriters, musicians, dancers, sound sculptors and actors. In 2015 he was awarded a Fulbright grant to attend the Music Omi residency in New York. In 2014 he graduated with a DMA from UC. In recent years he has appeared in concerts, theatre, workshops and festivals, and on recordings in New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Poland and Australia.
