Earlier this week Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University Canterbury (UC) celebrated the new naming of Te Tari Pūhanga Metarahi me te Taiao | Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Previously the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering, the change of name was marked at an event that reflected on the department’s history, achievements and future direction and was attended by department students, staff, alumni as well as industry stakeholders.
The change reflects UC academics, graduates and students' commitment to addressing the challenges of today and tomorrow. As Aotearoa New Zealand and the world seek low-carbon, future-focused pathways forward, the department is uniquely positioned at the intersection of environmental action and economic advancement.
It also signals the department’s future direction and supports the department’s growing body of research focused on sustainability and environmental systems.
“This is an exciting milestone for the department and for UC. The new name reflects our focus on real-world engineering that addresses today’s infrastructure and environmental challenges while enabling economic development. Our graduates will be well prepared to contribute to nation-building projects and deliver practical outcomes for Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond,” says Executive Dean of Engineering, Professor Saurabh Sinha.
