Celebrating Architecture at UC for Open Christchurch 2025

05 May 2025

Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) proudly welcomed the community onto campus this past weekend for Open Christchurch 2025, joining 51 sites across the city in celebrating exceptional architecture and design.

HOW TO APPLY

On Sunday 4 May, UC opened three of its landmark buildings—Puaka-James Hight Central Library, Beatrice Tinsley, and Ernest Rutherford—to the public. Between 11am and 2pm, visitors explored the spaces through architecture tours and a creative exploration activity designed to engage all ages and abilities. The event offered a unique opportunity to experience the University’s blend of historic and contemporary design from the inside.

College House, UC’s historic hall of residence, also took part in the festival, offering pre-booked tours across the weekend. The Macmillan Brown Library hosted two 45-minute sessions, where participants explored the archives with Mountfort expert Professor Ian Lochhead and UC archivist Erin Kimber. Attendees had the rare chance to view original drawings and learn about the Gothic Revival style in a local context.

Open Christchurch once again highlighted the richness of design across Ōtautahi. UC was proud to be part of this annual celebration, connecting people with place through the power of architecture.
