PhD student numbers are a warning sign for NZ’s future

The decline in doctoral candidates at New Zealand universities is concerning for the country’s ambitions for a knowledge-based economy.

UC Science Professor Ian Wright, in the School of Earth and Environment, says the challenges include funding constraints, and the number of doctoral students having declined due to financial pressure. Increasing investment in higher research degrees and doctoral graduates could help boost the economy.
