About the Event

Experience the future of immersive technology at HIT Lab NZ's annual Open House.

Whether you're considering postgraduate study or are simply curious about the latest developments in virtual and augmented reality, AI, applied games design, and human-centred design, this free event offers a unique opportunity to explore our research, meet our team, and experience cutting-edge technology firsthand.

The Human Interface Technology Lab New Zealand (HIT Lab NZ), based in the University of Canterbury's Faculty of Engineering, is an internationally recognised research centre exploring how people interact with technology through immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), applied games and immersive simulations, artificial intelligence (AI), haptic design and tactile perception, 360° media, and sensory systems.

Explore our research

Meet our researchers, staff, and students as they showcase interactive demonstrations and research projects developed at HIT Lab NZ. Try a range of immersive experiences, discover how our technologies are solving real-world challenges, and learn how human-centred design is shaping the future of digital experiences.

Thinking about postgraduate study?

If you're interested in a career in UX, immersive technologies, XR, interactive systems, or emerging technologies, this is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the Master of Human Interface Technology (MHIT).

The MHIT is a unique postgraduate qualification that combines user-centred design with emerging technologies, giving students the skills to design, develop, and evaluate the next generation of interactive experiences. Students gain hands-on experience creating hardware and software solutions, working on industry-connected and research-driven projects, and exploring the broader impact of technology on people and society.

Talk with our academic staff and current students about:

  • Career opportunities in AR/VR, AI, UX and interactive technologies
  • The Master of Human Interface Technology programme
  • Research projects and postgraduate study pathways
  • Life as a postgraduate student at HIT Lab NZ
