Progress reports

28 July 2025

Progress Reports provide an opportunity for research students to review and track their progress against their overall project plan; reflect upon research and development in past months and structure plans for the next part of the research journey; and raise any issues or concerns regarding progress.

HOW TO APPLY
Getting the most out of progress reports

The Progress Report is a key means by which supervisors and the University monitor and evaluate your progress but also a great opportunity for you to reflect on the past 6 months and plan ahead to make sure you stay on track. They also provide you with an opportunity to consider opportunities for skill development - you can use the Researcher Development Framework to identify areas you want to develop in.

Progress Reports must be submitted every 6 months after approval of Confirmation for doctoral students. Please note that it is the student's responsibility to ensure reports are submitted on time.

Please note that if sufficient progress is not being made by a doctoral student,  the Unsatisfactory Progress Process may be initiated. This process is outlined in the Unsatisfactory Progress Procedures.

Final Year

If the time between your most recent Progress Report and your thesis submission date is less than six months, a final Progress Report may not be required as your thesis submission will demonstrate progress. If, however, you apply for an extension to your final submission date which subsequently extends the time between Progress Report and submission to more than 6 months, a Progress Report would be required.
