You can choose from wide ranging topics at UC, such as family dynamics, criminal activity, disasters, health, death, environmentalism, and religion.

What will my study involve?

  • Postgraduate Sociology at UC focuses on rigorous sociological analysis and understanding of people's lives in the real world. This approach enables you to develop analytical skills that are highly valued by employers in the public and private sectors.
  • The Sociology programme at UC is known for its diverse range of graduate student projects. Past students have examined diverse topics including: negotiating sexualities in high school; forest sustainability in Nigeria; the impact of post-quake water pollution on Sumner's surfing community; and global sneaker communities.
  • An MA or MA(Thesis) is a one-year postgraduate qualification that prepares you as a professional social researcher. A PhD is a three-year specialist research degree for access to academic and higher research positions across the professional sectors. Honours, MA, MA(Thesis), and PhD degrees are offered in the Sociology Department.
