Laboratories and facilities

UC's School of Product Design has a number of dedicated laboratories and facilities for our Bachelor of Product Design students. These including a gaming suite, chemical formulation laboratories, 3D print workshops, die cutters, and lathes. Learn more about our Product Design laboratories and facilities.


Workshop 2a - Metal Workshop contains lathes and milling machines, a 60 watt and a 130 watt laser-cutter/engraver, battery and hand tools.

Workshop 2b - Wood Workshop contains a table saw, thicknessor, bandsaws, drill presses, wood lathe and various sanding machinery, battery and hand tools.

Advance Prototyping Workshop contains a CNC Router and numerous 3D printers.

Electronics Workshop contains power-supplied, meters, soldering equipment and electrical tools.

The School of Product Design has three design studios used for lectures, tutorials and as quiet study areas

Len Lye Makerspace 1 is where first year students develop, design and produce hand-crafted models as well as assembling and finishing items created in the workshops. Equipment in the makerspace includes UP 3D printers, a Roland vinyl cutter and a multitude of hand tools.

West Makerspace 3 is where our second year students design and assemble their prototypes. This makerspace contains equipment for working with plastic (thermoformer, strip heaters, hot wires etc.) UP 3D printers, light machinery and a multitude of battery and hand tools.

The Formulation Laboratory is where students create a range of formulations (cosmetic, pharmaceutical, agricultural, household etc.) and conduct their research. The formulation lab contains magnetic and overhead stirrers, a centrifuge, a pH meter, an oven, microscopes, as well as the following specialist equipment:

Silverson Homogenizer: for mixing, emulsifying, homogenizing, disintegrating and dissolving. It is used in creating creams, ointments and sauces, and in flavouring emulsions and pharmaceutical suspensions.

3D Bioprinter: for 3D printing of biological and bio-based materials.

UV-vis spectrophotometer: for the quantitative determination of different analytes. Multiple measurement modes are available such as photometric, spectrum, quantitation, kinetics, time course and biomethod.

Skin analyser: for measuring skin parameters, such as hydration level of the skin surface, colour of the skin, transepidermal water loss, and skin elasticity.

The School of Product Design has 70 computers across two computer labs. 30 of the computers have 32GB RAM and GTX 1080 graphics cards, the other 40 have 16GB RAM and GTX 1060 graphics cards. All the computers have 2 x 27” monitors.

The VR/Game Suite has a room scale VR setup using Vive and a 2080Ti, a selection of game consoles: 2 x Nintendo Switch, 2 x PS4 Pro (One with PlayStation VR), 2 x XBox One X and a library of games for evaluation. This space is used by students for VR experience testing and game evaluation, study of existing game design, and user testing of student created games and applications.

The AR/VR Suite has a room scale VR setup using Vive Pro and a 2080Ti, High spec PCs with HP Windows Mixed Reality headsets for VR development. The space is used for VR experience testing and evaluation and the creation of VR games and applications.

Additional equipment available includes Oculus Rifts, HTC Vive Focus, Oculus Go, HP Windows MR headsets, Xbox Controllers, PlayStation Controllers, audio recorders, cameras and headphones.
