Guide to applying for teacher education

If you're applying for a Teaching NZ Scholarship, we recommend you still apply to StudyLink for funding as your scholarship might not come through in time for the programme start date. If that happens, your Teaching NZ Scholarship can refund StudyLink.

Applying to a teacher education programme at UC has 6 steps.

Apply to enrol at UC

1. Apply to enrol at the University of Canterbury through myUC and read this important information about studying teacher education.

Apply to the teacher education programme

Apply to the teacher education programme with the following materials:

A CV, resume, or statement of previous experience.
Transcripts of all tertiary study completed and in progress.
Two referee reports.
A school report (for those still in secondary school).
Evidence of language competency.

Complete an online literacy test

Complete an online literacy and numeracy test.

Interview

Students who have met the above requirements will then be invited to an interview.

Proof of identity

Provide two forms of evidence of your identity.

Complete a Police background check

Complete safety check under the Children's Act 2014 which includes Police background check and face to face identity verification.

It’s important to submit all documentation promptly, as your application will be held up if we have not received all required materials.

Application closing dates

Domestic application closing date: 1 December
Alternative Entry and Mātauranga Māori application closing date 1 December, but it's recommended you apply before 31 October
International application closing date: 31 October

There are no mid-year intakes. Please apply early, as some subject areas (Secondary only) have limited capacity. Applications will be reviewed as they are received.
