Guide to applying for teacher education

Applying to a teacher education programme at UC has 6 steps.


If you're applying for a Teaching NZ Scholarship, we recommend you still apply to StudyLink for funding as your scholarship might not come through in time for the programme start date. If that happens, your Teaching NZ Scholarship can refund StudyLink.

1. Apply to enrol at the University of Canterbury through myUC and read this important information about studying teacher education.

Apply to the teacher education programme with the following materials:

NOTE: Part of the application process for our Mātauranga Māori endorsement is a selection hui to evaluate your te reo Māori proficiency level. Find out more about Mātauranga Māori endorsement: te reo Māori proficiency


Complete an online literacy test



Students who have met the above requirements will then be invited to an interview.


Proof of identity


Complete a Police background check

Complete safety check under the Children's Act 2014 which includes Police background check and face to face identity verification.

It’s important to submit all documentation promptly, as your application will be held up if we have not received all required materials.

Application closing dates

  • Domestic applications closing date: 1 December
  • Alternative Entry Pathway and Mātauranga Māori applications closing date 1 December, but it's recommended you apply before 31 October
  • International applications closing date: 31 October

There are no mid-year intakes. Please apply early, as some subject areas (Secondary only) have limited capacity. Applications will be reviewed as they are received.
