HOW TO APPLY

Our one-year teaching programmes are designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to succeed in today’s classrooms. You will learn about the theory, practice and management of teaching and gain hands-on experience throughout your study with 16 weeks of professional practice in schools.

Choose which qualification pathway from below and which specialist endorsement from Primary, Secondary, or Early Childhood teaching and learn the curriculum specific to your chosen field.

Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood)

Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Secondary) Alternative Entry Pathway Te reo and Technology only

Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Primary Education)

Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Secondary Education)

Master of Teaching and Learning (Primary Education)

Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary Education)

The main differences between these qualification pathways are the entry requirements as well as the structure and focus of the assessments. The various course levels are distinguished by differences in learning outcomes, additional or different teaching, additional reading at the postgraduate level, and distinctions in assessments that require more critical analysis and application at the post-graduate level.

  • Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning – 150 points of coursework with 80 days of professional practice in schools. Applicants require a bachelor’s degree.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning – 150 points, combines research-informed knowledge and critical enquiry with 80 days of professional practice in schools. Applicants require a bachelor’s degree with a B average.
  • Master of Teaching and Learning – consists of 180 points, 150 points of coursework from the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning with a further 30-point course, TEPI615 Research for Teaching (Summer School), and 80 days of professional practice in schools. Applicants require a bachelors degree with a B average.

All of our intial teacher education programmes meet Matatū Aotearoa | Teaching Council of New Zealand graduating teachers standards requirements, and you may be eligible for provisional registration with the Council as a teacher in Aotearoa New Zealand.
