Antarctica & Southern Oceans

02 October 2026

Revealing how Antarctica's atmosphere, ice and oceans shape the global climate, and harnessing that knowledge to support protection and good governance of the world's most extreme and climate-critical region.

HOW TO APPLY

Through world-leading research spanning climate science, oceanography, ecology, environmental governance and Antarctic operations, UC researchers study the interconnected Antarctic and Southern Ocean systems that influence weather, sea levels, biodiversity and environmental change across the globe.

This work helps improve climate predictions, informs evidence-based policy and management, strengthens New Zealand's role in Antarctic stewardship, and supports international efforts to safeguard the environmental, scientific and cultural values of the Antarctic region for future generations.
