UC Associate Professor Cathy Andrews has been recognised for her services to nursing education.
Before becoming UC’s Acting Executive Dean of Te Kaupeka Oranga |the Faculty of Health in 2022, Associate Professor Andrew had a significant impact on nursing education in Aotearoa New Zealand and offshore. She was previously a nurse in intensive care units (ICU) and mental health, which led to her initial research around whānau and their experiences.
As Head of Nursing at Ara Institute of Canterbury for 20 years, she developed the first graduate entry pathway in Aotearoa New Zealand which led to a master’s degree plus nursing registration. The Dedicated Education Unit: Canterbury Model was another initiative that transformed clinical teaching models in other organisations and increased the numbers of nursing graduates nationally.
She supported the development of other health-related programmes in Ōtautahi Christchurch and further afield and led the introduction of a range of other programmes of study to grow health workforce capability.
Associate Professor Andrew served on advisory groups, panels, and committees for groups such as Nurse Maude, Health Quality and Safety, Nursing Council of NZ, Vanuatu Qualifications Authority, NZ Qualifications Authority and the National Nurse Leaders group.
Also recognised among the Birthday honourees were many UC alumni, including former Christchurch mayor and MP the Honourable Lianne Dalziel and newly knighted rugby coach Sir Wayne Smith.
Sir Wayne CNZM was appointed Knights Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rugby. He was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2012 for his services to rugby and has led the men’s and women’s sides to Rugby World Cup victory in recent times. Sir Wayne took over coaching of the Black Ferns six months prior to the tournament kicking off, which led the Black Ferns to their sixth World Cup title. He received his Teaching Diploma from UC.
Former government minister and Christchurch Mayor from 2013 until 2022, the Honourable Lianne Dalziel was appointed Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to local government and as a Member of Parliament. She recently joined the global board of directors for the Resilient Cities Network and continues to be an internationally recognised champion of resilience and post-disaster opportunities. She received her Bachelor of Laws from UC.

CNZM Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit:
Professor Alison Cree, for services to herpetology, particularly tuatara. Emeritus Professor Alison Cree is a leading zoologist and herpetology expert who worked to enhance conservation outcomes for herpetofauna. She received her Bachelor of Science with Honours from UC.
Dr Karen Grylls, ONZM, for services to choral music. She was the Artistic Director of Choirs Aotearoa New Zealand since 1989 and was Musical Director of the New Zealand Youth Choir from 1989 to 2011. Dr Grylls received her Teaching Diploma with Distinction from UC.
ONZM Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit:
Mr Nick Billowes, for services to education. Mr Billowes focused on designing and promoting quality professional development services for teachers. He is a former staff member of the University.
Mr Wayne Norrie, for services to business and governance. Mr Norrie implemented innovative strategies to increase New Zealand’s international trade exports and championed future technologies for more than 20 years. He has a Bachelor of Science from UC.
MNZM Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit:
Mr Simon Challies, for services to people with neurological conditions. Mr Simon Challies is the Executive Director of the Canterbury Brain Collective Ltd (BrainTree), a charity supporting people living with neurological conditions. He has a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce from UC.
Mr Gerald Dwyer, for services to rowing. Mr Gerald Dwyer dedicated 50 years of leadership and service to rowing. Mr Dwyer was appointed to the Board of Rowing New Zealand in 2000, serving as Chairman from 2013 to 2022, during which New Zealand won 18 Olympic Rowing medals. He has a Bachelor of Laws from UC.
Ms Anna Rogers, for services to literature. Ms Rogers has been a book editor in New Zealand for 45 years. She helped to establish the New Zealand Association of Manuscript Assessors and was involved in the Listener Women’s Book Festival and served on the New Zealand Book Council. She has a Master of Arts with Honours from UC.
Mr Derek Shaw, for services to the environment, local government, and athletics. Mr Shaw has advocated for environmental, community and sporting causes in the Nelson region since the 1970s. He received his Teaching Diploma from UC.
Mr Arthur Sutherland, for services to outdoor education. Mr Sutherland dedicated 45 years to outdoor education in New Zealand, having been involved with the Ministry of Education since 1978. He was an Executive Member of Education Outdoor New Zealand between 2004 and 2010, received the Supreme Award for contribution to Outdoor Recreation and was made Life Member in 2003. He is a former staff member of the University.
Mrs Awerangi Tamihere, for services to Māori health. Mrs Awerangi Tamihere (Ngāti Kauwhata, Rangitāne, Ngāti Porou, Rongowhakaata, Kāi Tahu) has been working in the field of Māori Health for more than 35 years, including health reform design at the national level and designing and implementing Māori health operational models. Mrs Tamihere received a Diploma of Teaching from UC.
Mr Kenneth Wilson, for services to education, research, and the economy. Mr Wilson contributed to the quality of public education, to innovation in research and the economy through his work in various organisations since 1975. He received a Master of Arts with Honours and a Teaching Diploma with Distinction from UC.
QSM Queen’s Service Medal:
Mr Anthony Fortune, for services to the community. Mr Fortune has been contributing to the rural West Coast community for several years. He received his Teaching Diploma, Bachelor of Teaching and Learning and Higher Diploma of Teaching from UC.
Mrs Colleen Carr, for services to the community. Mrs Carr has been active in the Lake Hāwea community for 24 years with community organisations, fundraising and events. She received her Bachelor of Arts from UC.
