Mainline - the Magazine of Christchurch’s Needle Exchange

HOW TO APPLY

The Macmillan Brown Library holds a wealth of newsletters and magazines from diverse local communities and organisations, which offer an often rare glimpse into the culture, activities, and issues facing segments of our society—past and present.

One unique example is Mainline, the magazine of Christchurch’s needle exchange, the Rodger Wright Centre. While its primary purpose is to promote harm reduction via safe injecting practices, it is far from a clinical leaflet. Instead, written by and for intravenous drug users, the magazine features an eclectic array of content that reflects the interests and issues facing its marginalised yet unapologetic audience: news, feature articles—from a biography of the Centre’s namesake, to the local development of “poppy seed bake” as a popular injectable opiate—poetry and short stories, obituaries, cartoons, letters to the editor, legal advice, book and film reviews, crosswords, and even cheap Christmas ideas (including recipes for cookies, playdoh, and bath bombs)!
