Dr Kate Pedley has been recognised with a University of Canterbury Teaching Excellence Award for her outstanding contributions to geology education. With over 16 years of experience at UC, Kate transforms complex Earth Science concepts into accessible, engaging learning for all students.
Her innovative teaching blends digital with hands-on fieldwork, helping students use a range of online tools to visualise subsurface models, geomorphic context and other complex geoscience structures in 3D to connect theory to real-world practice. She has also expanded frontiers by leading the creation of the UC Earth Science Garden - New Zealand’s first comprehensive teaching rock garden - bringing field experiences to campus and making geology more inclusive and accessible. The garden offers 24/7 access for learners with financial, mobility or caregiving challenges to gain authentic experiences and practice field skills.
Kate is also part of the teaching team for SCIM101 Science, Māori and Indigenous Knowledge and develops Mātauranga and pūrākau resources on Earth Science for the geology programme at UC and schools, enriching students’ understanding of Aotearoa’s landscapes and fostering a strong sense of belonging. Her students praise her for her clarity, care, and ability to spark curiosity.
As Chair of the School of Earth and Environment’s Teaching and Learning Committee, she mentors colleagues and drives curriculum innovation. Her work with industry partners and international collaborators ensures UC’s geology programme remains globally relevant and future focused. Her blend of empathy, innovation, and academic rigour transforms the student learning experience.
