Sustainability strategy

Rautaki Tūroa

06 August 2026

At the University of Canterbury we weave sustainability through our teaching, research, campus and partnerships, working to leave a net positive impact on the natural world for present and future generations. Our commitment is grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the principle of kaitiakitanga — guardianship of the natural environment. Together, we are turning that commitment into real change: growing sustainability-focused graduates, research that addresses global challenges, and a campus that leads by example. Our direction is set by three connected documents — our vision, our policy and our plan.

HOW TO APPLY

UC Strategic Vision 2020–2030 | Whāinga Rautaki: Our overarching institutional vision, whose Environmentally Sustainable chapter makes sustainability a core commitment and sets five priority areas for action.

Sustainability Policy | Herenga Tūroa: Sitting beneath the Vision, the Policy frames the values and principles that guide our work — the "why".

Sustainability Plan 2022–2030: Delivering the Vision's Environmentally Sustainable chapter, the Plan turns the five priority areas into specific projects and measurable targets — the "how".

Mana whenua of UC: UC is a committed bicultural university operating in an intercultural world, and our relationship with mana whenua sits at the heart of how we care for the natural environment. We acknowledge Ngāi Tūāhuriri as the mana whenua of the land on which the University is situated, and — supported by the UC–Ngāi Tūāhuriri Partnership agreement — we partner with Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāi Tahu more broadly to uphold the mana and aspirations of mana whenua. Guided by kaitiakitanga and the principles of manaakitanga, mauri tū, mahinga kai and tauutuutu, this partnership shapes our approach to guardianship of the whenua, wai and taiao for present and future generations.
