Receiving a scholarship is more than financial support - it is a meaningful recognition of hard work, perseverance, and potential. It affirms that the genuine interest and effort you invest in your goals are seen and valued. In many ways, it feels like a vote of confidence, encouraging you to keep striving and to believe in what you are capable of achieving.

Beyond this, a scholarship fosters a strong sense of community. It connects you with people who support your journey, offering guidance, encouragement, and opportunities to grow.

Especially when studying away from home, this network can make all the difference. It creates a reassuring sense that you are not alone, and that there are always people willing to support you and help you succeed.

The EPECentre scholarship has enabled me to meet representative from different areas of the power industry and helped me identify the pathways in the sector that best align with my interests and skills.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities provided from the EPECentre such as the North Island power systems field trip which highlighted New Zealand’s diversity of generation and industry demand for renewable energy.

So far in my electrical engineering career, I have had incredible experiences working at Edison Consulting Group and Meridian Energy, both of which are sponsors of the Aruhiko Power Engineering Excellence Trust.

The Barbara Kathryn Ell Travel Scholarship assisted me to undertake essential archival research at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

During this trip, I consulted a range of non-digitised historical documents that have proven central to the development of my thesis, allowing me to produce research that makes a meaningful contribution to existing scholarship. Access to these materials—along with the opportunity to engage directly with curators and archivists—greatly deepened my understanding of the museum’s historical functions.

This experience has not only advanced my current research but also affirmed my commitment to pursuing further postgraduate study. I plan to return to the Louvre’s archives to conduct additional research for my PhD in History, building on the momentum established during this trip.

The scholarship’s straightforward application process and financial support played a vital role in making this significant stage of my academic development possible.

Receiving the Ethel Susan Jones Scholarship to support an MFA in Film Directing at UCLA has been a real honor.

Ilam is where my love for film first took root, so there's something special about being supported from the place that sparked it all. The scholarship has been essential in allowing me to live and be here, to fully throw myself into this period of learning and growth.

Together with Fulbright support, it's given me the stability to focus, experiment, and develop both technically and creatively. I feel incredibly lucky to be here, and genuinely excited for what's ahead.

In a word, these scholarships have given me hope.

Being an awardee gave me the opportunity to study what ails my grandmother, and to pursue a PhD contributing to research seeking to understand the mechanisms of this currently incurable disease. Moreover, the chance to pursue higher education, let alone in such a specialised field, was not something I ever envisioned for myself.

These awards opened doors to possibilities I had not begun to imagine, not only for myself, but for those like my grandmother living with rare ailments. If my journey can serve as any encouragement, I hope it shows that a PhD, and the impact it enables, is within reach for anyone willing to dream beyond their circumstances.

For me, what began as a deeply personal motivation has grown into a commitment to ensuring that others facing similar challenges might also have reason to hope, thanks to the support of these scholarships.

The John Rutherford scholarship has had a truly profound impact, alleviating many of my worries about finances, and helping me to embrace opportunities that I might otherwise have disregarded due to the cost.

It has supported me in managing the demands of an Engineering conjoint degree whilst also enabling experiences beyond my core studies, such as a study tour to Southeast Asia.

Having the freedom to embrace more opportunities outside my core studies has not been something to take for granted, and is something I continue to be grateful for.

I am from the Philippines, and I grew up in a family that is service-oriented. Throughout the years, my expertise in development communication has drawn me to various community projects. These experiences and stories from the community led me to further explore and learn about community health workers in the Philippines for my PhD thesis.

With my co-scholars, we are immensely proud to be the recipients of this fantastic scholarship programme. The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship programme allowed us to enjoy learning and exploring this beautiful country of New Zealand. Being away from our home countries, we appreciate the chance to meet remarkable people and see new places, which is a constant source of motivation. Indeed, these opportunities led to a genuine experience of whananungatanga on this personal journey at the University of Canterbury and the Garden City of Ōtautahi Christchurch.

I always remind myself that education is an invaluable gift. The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship recognises this gift by promoting both learning and personal growth. To us recipients, the scholarship fosters deeper connections between New Zealand and its partner countries, and it is an unforgettable journey in our lives.

The Outstanding Impact Scholarship has had an incredible impact in both my studies and university life at the University of Canterbury. From meeting incredible like-minded students, to seeing a rocket soar through the air, the scholarship opened many doors for me.

I was mentored by the Co-Founder of Dawn Aerospace, learning incredible wisdom and advice for my future engineering career. I also had gotten the opportunity to continue my impact with the scholarship now working as Kaitiaki Akonga Mentor for the Te Kau a Maui Scholarship program in 2026, and a Wellbeing Navigator for Student Wellbeing.

The support from the scholarship made my first year at university just a little easier, allowing me to access direct support with PALS, and have fantastically supportive student success coaches to help guide me through the year, with many success workshops facilitated by the coaches to allow us to understand ourselves better, and what it takes to succeed at UC.

Receiving the Penelope Wilson Art and Culture Internship Grant provided me with the opportunity to travel as part of my master’s degree in art history.

I used this scholarship to study objects up close at Te Papa and Auckland Museum, where I was able to meet the curators and collection managers, and gain a more in-depth understanding of the materialities of the nineteenth and twentieth-century handcrafted objects I am researching.

I am incredibly appreciative of the financial support and the opportunities this scholarship presented for my research. It feels particularly validating to have received an award specifically for the study of art history, and I am so grateful to the donors for providing me with the means to keep doing what I love.

The opportunity to be awarded the scholarships has meant everything to me. It was quite daunting initially to come to the University of Canterbury, and I carried a lot of anxiety about exploring a new environment and the financial responsibilities that come with it.

The scholarships significantly reduced the financial burden on my family, allowing me to focus entirely on my studies and fully immerse myself in the community at UC. Beyond the financial support, being selected for the scholarships has given me a lot of motivation. It drives me to work harder to prove that I am worthy of the support given to me, while also allowing me to experience life in an amazing and beautiful country.

I am deeply grateful for the support of the Tytheridge Travelling Scholarship in Arts. This scholarship has supported my studies towards a PhD in Law at the University of Cambridge and has been instrumental in my academic journey.

It seems especially fitting that my studies at University of Canterbury were in music, and that my time in Cambridge has been greatly enriched by musical opportunities, including serving as Organ Scholar of the Chapel Choir at Christ's College, Cambridge.

The scholarship has allowed me to pursue excellence in both law and music, two disciplines that have shaped my education and personal development. I cannot adequately express how much this generosity has meant to me, and I remain profoundly thankful for the opportunities it has made possible.

I am a journalist who is passionate about the topics I report on. This scholarship allowed me to travel to Victoria and research how its justice system and suppression practices stack up to ours.

I cannot understate how lucky I feel to have been given this opportunity. It allowed me to sit down and interview some of Australia’s leaders in law and academia about their involvement in some of the country’s most high profile criminal cases. Their insights were invaluable and I would not have had the access, time or resources needed for such a project if it had not been for this scholarship. This was a huge milestone in my life both personally and professional, and I could not be more grateful for the experience.

Receiving the John Rutherford Scholarship has made a huge difference to both my university experience and the opportunities available to me. Without the scholarship I would have needed to take on significantly more student debt and work a part-time job throughout the semester to help cover costs. Instead, it allowed me to focus more on my studies, which had a positive impact on my grades, while also giving me more time to fully engage in university life.

The scholarship also gave me opportunities that I would not otherwise have been able to pursue, particularly my exchange to Boulder, Colorado. That experience allowed me to experience a different university culture, meet people from all over the world, and build valuable connections within the mechanical and aerospace industries. It was an incredibly rewarding experience both personally and professionally, and something that would not have been possible for me without the support of the scholarship.

Overall, the scholarship has taken a huge amount of financial pressure off me and allowed me to make the most of my time at university, both academically and personally.

Being granted a scholarship in my final year of undergraduate study drastically improved my experience at the University of Canterbury.

Moving away from my hometown was one of my only options to pursue further study of Classics and Ancient Greek. The University of Canterbury, along with the Teece Museum, provided a unique experience for me to study, and continue studying Classics, that I could get no where else, so it was important to me to move to Christchurch.

The scholarship eased the financial pressure of living alone and academic costs, so I could focus on my studies instead of working extra hours. Scholarships, along with other support from the University, my lecturers, the halls of residence and others created an environment where I can focus on my study and enjoy university life.

Knowing that someone is rooting for you is a feeling you can’t put a price on. Receiving this scholarship is an honour and I am so thankful for the generosity of those supporting me. The C S McCully scholarship eased financial stress, allowing me to fully devote my time and energy to my studies. This is a privilege, one that many do not have, and for that I am grateful.

As a woman in engineering, it is hard to have a voice when so often it is undermined or dismissed. This scholarship reminded me that I do belong, that I deserve to be here. It gave me the confidence and motivation to keep going in hopes of one day making an impact on the world of engineering.

Receiving the John Rutherford Scholarship has had an incredibly meaningful and transformative impact on my university experience.

The financial support it provided relieved a considerable amount of pressure, allowing me to fully dedicate myself to my studies throughout my second year of Industrial Product Design. With this freedom, I was able to achieve strong grades and engage more deeply with my coursework.

Beyond academic performance, the scholarship also gave me the time and to expand my skill set outside of class. I’ve been able to explore new design software, refine my technical abilities, and push myself creatively in ways that have better prepared me for the demands of a competitive industry.

The scholarship eased the financial burden of studying law at UC and living away from my home in the North Island. By helping cover enrolment fees and living costs, it reduced the overall debt on my student loan and allowed me to focus more fully on my studies.

It also gave me the opportunity to enrol in Summer School (PYSC206), which played an important role in helping me decide whether to continue solely with a law degree or pursue the double degree in Laws and Arts that I began in my first year. Like many students, I was still exploring my direction, and this additional support provided both flexibility and reassurance during that process.

I am extremely grateful to have my academic and extracurricular achievements recognised through this scholarship. It has greatly boosted my confidence and motivated me to continue striving for excellence.

This scholarship has been an immense help to me and made a significant impact in my life at university. It has alleviated significant financial pressure in my daily life, allowing me to focus more on my studies and motivating me to work harder towards achieving my goals.

Growing up in Otago then moving to Christchurch was a challenge, and finding support for students like me at the University of Canterbury has not been easy. Finding this scholarship was a pleasant surprise as I never expected a scholarship made for students like me at the University of Canterbury.

The application process was very simple and straightforward, and I am truly grateful to have received this scholarship.

Abner - UC Renewable Energy postgraduate student Abner - UC Renewable Energy postgraduate student

Studying the Master of Engineering Studies endorsed in Renewable Energy at UC is something I had hoped to do for a long time, but postgraduate study overseas is a big step and not something I could take lightly.

The Orion Master’s Energy Scholarship has meant a lot to me because it made that step feel possible. More than financial support, it felt like encouragement from a community that cares about the future of energy in Aotearoa. It reminded me that the mahi I want to do in renewable energy is worth pursuing.

My background is in electrical engineering, and my interest in renewable energy grew through projects involving solar power, energy harvesting, and practical energy systems. The more I learned, the more I realised this is the field I want to keep growing in.

Aotearoa’s net zero 2050 target makes renewable energy feel even more meaningful to me. After graduation, I hope to be part of engineering work that helps Kiwi communities move towards cleaner, smarter, and more reliable energy systems.

This scholarship has given me breathing room, confidence, and a stronger sense of direction for my future.

The Hugh McDougall Rankin Education Scholarship has meant far more to me than financial help. It arrived at a pivotal time after my unpaid overseas internship, easing the pressure of my final year and allowing me to focus on my studies and the extracurricular projects I care about.

These include biomedical engineering initiatives, a Tongan hospital service trip, and leadership in UC BIOMED.

Being chosen is a powerful vote of confidence that my hard work matters. This support reinforces my conviction in the impact of education and motivates me to make a meaningful contribution to healthcare in New Zealand and beyond.

Receiving the Betty Wignall Scholarship in Chemistry has made a real difference in my final master’s year. Balancing research, lab work, and living costs can be challenging, and this support took some of that pressure off. It meant I could put more time into my thesis and focus on getting reliable, consistent results in the lab without needing to take on extra work hours.

It also felt good to have my efforts recognised. Research can be slow and technical, and most progress happens behind the scenes, so being awarded this scholarship was a strong reminder that the work I’m doing matters. It has given me more confidence as I prepare to move into PhD studies and continue building a career in chemistry.

I’m grateful that this scholarship supports students in such a practical and meaningful way. It came at a time when it genuinely helped me stay focused and steady in the last stretch of my degree, and I appreciate the impact it has had on my study experience.

Receiving the Graduates Association Postgraduate Scholarship for Arts, Business, and Law Prize for 2025 came as a complete surprise to me.

I am completing my Masters of Applied Translation and Interpreting in 2026 but at the time of applying I was frantically trying to find funding to help finance my final semester of this programme to take place in Granada, Spain at their specialised faculty of Translation & Interpreting.

It was a very straightforward application process, and every little bit counts towards funding an exchange. It showed me that regardless of the niche discipline that I may be in, I was able to win a general prize such as this, so it is worth applying for regardless of what you study within these 3 fields!

Receiving Scott Technology’s Women in Engineering Scholarship in 2025 has been greatly invaluable to my mechanical engineering studies. It was an uplifting boost of support to my passion for learning. The scholarship provided me with a paid internship opportunity with Scott Technology during the summer break. I learnt from highly experienced engineers about automation and machine design. This scholarship has allowed me to create a strong industry connection with a global, highly respected engineering company.

The application process included an interview with some of the leaders at Scott who encouraged me to share my aspirations in the engineering space. Their initiative to support women in engineering is commendable.

The Elsie Davey Memorial Trust Scholarship gave me much needed support to complete my Bachelor of Fine Arts with First Class Honours. It allowed me to be ambitious with the development of my artwork and create at a monumental scale that would have been impossible otherwise.

I am grateful to the University of Canterbury Te Wananga o Waitaha for letting me celebrate my Tagalog and Chabacano heritage in my art practice and contextualise that cultural knowledge within Aotearoa’s multicultural landscape.

The artwork funded by this scholarship, Kasamaan and the Outsourced (2025), can be viewed in the Kā Kohika Macmillan Brown Archive as part of the SELECT Annual Student Exhibition.

Receiving the CWF Hamilton and Co Scholarship was an incredible opportunity that allowed me to continue developing novel ice sampling equipment for Antarctic research within my Master of Mechanical Engineering Degree.

My research aimed to develop new technology to increase the number of ice samples that can be collected across Antarctica. Increasing the suite of ice samples available for analysis is vital to improving the robustness of ice sheet and sea level rise modelling.

The financial support of this scholarship allowed me to focus my time on designing and building prototypes of two ice sampling systems throughout the academic year, and thus, in time for the Antarctic summer science season.

This outcome meant that I could personally field test the equipment I developed on the McMurdo Ice Shelf in Antarctica and collect ice samples that are being analysed to help understand the ice shelf flow patterns.

The Ngāi Tahu Research Centre Scholarship has allowed me to pursue my passion for ecological research and engage meaningfully in the scientific and local community. Most importantly, it has facilitated collaboration with Wairewa rūnanga, to support research of native mokomoko (lizards) within a local Wairewa project, converting farmland to native podocarp forest.

This support helps ensure that the development of my research is not confined to academia, but contributes to the restoration aspirations of Wairewa, closely connected to on-the-ground outcomes.

Furthermore, the scholarship has been central in building relationships and broadening my understanding of knowledge systems, particularly within a local context. This has been incredibly rewarding and has reinforced the importance of place-based research which is responsive to the cultural, ecological, and historical context of the land.

I am immensely grateful that the NTRC scholarship has enabled me to develop these relationships and supported these opportunities, and I look forward to the continued restoration of the whenua at Wairewa.
