Abstract
Abstract: CoastSnap is a low-cost community beach monitoring program that empowers local communities to collect quantitative measurements of coastline change using their smartphones. Underpinning CoastSnap is a stainless-steel smartphone cradle that is installed overlooking a beach in a location easily accessible to the public. Using the cradle for positioning, passers-by simply take a photo of the coast and upload it to a centralized database via the CoastSnap App. Image processing techniques subsequently convert these crowd-sourced images into datasets of shoreline change, with an overall accuracy in the order of 2-4 m horizontally. Commencing as a pilot project on the northern beaches of Sydney in 2017, the CoastSnap project has now grown to comprise over 250 CoastSnap stations in 24 countries (www.coastsnap.com). This talk will present an overview of the CoastSnap program to date and discuss new innovations.
