As well as playing football, Rebecca has been playing Futsal seriously for the past five years and is a current NZ Futsal fern.
She juggled the sport with her studies at UC and now that she’s a graduate, fits it in around her new job working at one of the big four accounting firms, KPMG.
Initially introduced to KPMG through an internship, Rebecca secured a full-time role in the Christchurch office’s Audit team in July 2021.
Rebecca says it’s fast paced and, at times, challenging.
“I love being tested to my limits and have found UC’s preparation was invaluable. Being organised, able to work under pressure and the ability to work and communicate with people is needed every day in my job.
“I think my involvement in sport has also helped me. It makes me realise what’s important to me, and how to allocate time to different areas of my life as well as allowing time for myself.”
She decided on a Commerce degree because she enjoyed the subject in school and has always been interested in numbers and business.
“I really enjoyed the UC journey and found the time went by very quickly. I met some fun, like-minded people and I loved the self-led, and holiday-filled experience.
“University involves a lot of self-led learning. UC helped by offering lectures, tutors, additional exam tutorials as well as support to ensure we were on the right track. I made sure I made the most out of all the opportunities on offer as ultimately, it’s up to the individual,” Rebecca says.
“My advice for new UC students is to make the most of all opportunities, don’t follow others and do what is best for you.”
Rebecca benefitted from the former Matariki scholarship totalling $12,500 over three years.
“It was a great opportunity because there was an amazing cultural experience that came along with this scholarship.”
She also received the University of Canterbury Undergraduate Scholarship in recognition of achieving Excellence in NCEA Level 2 and 3.
