Have a drink and a think at Raising the Bar

The University of Canterbury is Raising the Bar, with 20 talks in 10 bars on 1 night in Christchurch, Lyttelton and Lincoln on topics that matter.

Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | the University of Canterbury (UC) is celebrating its 150th birthday with events and activities throughout 2023 to give back to the community. For 150 years, UC has been making knowledge accessible. Raising the Bar continues this tradition with talks on topics ranging from the sciences to the arts, business to engineering.

For one night only – Tuesday 2 May – there will be 20 talks across 10 bar venues throughout Ōtautahi Christchurch and wider Waitaha Canterbury (Lyttelton and Lincoln).  These include improving mental healthresisting antibiotic resistanceAI in business and Virtual Reality and the Metaversehow to stop hating exercisehow to change the world, and more.

SDG 4 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 - Quality Education

An international phenomenon that started in New York, next month’s Raising the Bar event is the first for UC and the South Island. The aim is to make knowledge accessible and spark conversations between academics and the public.

Each venue will hold two different sessions: one from 6pm until 7pm, and the second from 7.30pm until 8.30pm. There will be a 15-minute question-and-answer session after each talk. Participating venues are: Craft Embassy, 12 Bar, Cascade Bar, Eruption Brewing, Blue Smoke, Two Thumb, Dux Central, Botanic, The Laboratory, and Pegasus Arms. Doors will open from 5.30pm.
