Talofa Lava!

HOW TO APPLY

Image: Mark Stocker, 1994, Fales, Apia, Mark Stocker Collection (MB1457, 3467). Macmillan Brown Library, Christchurch, New Zealand.

This week is Samoan Language Week and this year’s theme is “Prepare yourself a gift for your travels.”

While actual travel is difficult at present, this metaphorical phrase reminds us to share our ōso (gifts), alofa (love) and tatalo (prayers) with everyone we meet along the way in life’s journey.

And we can always armchair travel! This palm fringed beach is located near Samoa’s capital Apia on the island of Upolo.

Hopefully we can include our Pacific neighbours in our ‘bubble sometime soon, so we can visit beautiful spots like this and aiga (families) and uo (friends) can reunite.

See more about this photograph, and explore our archive and art collections in our catalogue, Kā Kohika.
