Catchment groups key to healthy waterways

11 August 2020

Senior lecturer Dr Ed Challis contributed to opinion piece on Stuff about the Our Land and Water National Science Challenge project ‘New Models of Collective Responsibility - Te Whakakotahitanga mō te Taiao’. The article describes a co-ordinated approach that links adjacent farm plans and focuses on outcomes will help heal NZ waterways.

HOW TO APPLY

A "Good Management Practice" approach "doesn't reflect the complexities of varies soils, weather, land use and farming practices that ultimately determine the health of waterways".

"Being responsible for the health of local waterways, instead of ticking GMP boxes, will get landowners to focus on doing what is most likely to improve the waterway. This will create a positive environment that motivates everyone to play their part and will give farmers greater control over their own destiny."
