Jobs with assistive technology

Assistive Technology employs a number of casual staff to support learning of students registered with our service. Find out about peer notetaking and other jobs with assistive technology at UC.

1) Become a peer notetaker 

Peer notetaking is where students contract with Hangarau Āheinga|Assistive Technology (HA|AT) for the purchase of copies of their notes in selected courses. These notes are used by other students at the University of Canterbury if they can’t take notes for themselves for accessibility-related reasons. If you are a currently enrolled student studying at UC then you will be eligible to become a peer notetaker - from undergraduate first-year students up to Masters.

Notes are purchased at a rate of $10.00 per one hour lecture, $20.00 per 2-3 hour lecture.

2‌‌‌‌‌) Casual Job opportunities within HA|AT

Hangarau Āheinga|Assistive Technology also employs a number of casual staff to assist in the provision of learning supports to students registered with our service. 

If you are a post-graduate student interested in this type of work or looking for work here on campus (Ilam and Dovedale), please write to atnotes@canterbury.ac.nz attaching a brief resume. We offer paid information sessions to all successful applicants.

We do one main recruitment drive each year and additional, more targeted searches to meet the changing needs of students and their subjects/courses.

Please note that you can register your interest at any time to be contacted during our next recruitment drive.

Role

  • Casual notetaking - taking notes in lectures, tutorials and labs. Available during term times, allocated according to student needs and course requirements. Casual note takers are used when there is no peer notetaker coverage in a course. 
 
3) HK|AFC (Hōputu Kē|Alternative Format Centre)
Role
  •  Formatter - formatting of lecture material, textbooks, research work, audio and video transcriptions.
    Those with a high typing speed of words/minute should apply and note this in their application email and CV for transcription work.
    Those with experience in MathType, LaTeX, and CorelDraw/other drawing software applications should apply and specify this in their application email and CV.
