Alexander the Great had a significant impact on the ancient world, so much so that his image continued to exert political and cultural influence even after his death in 323 BCE. Evidence of Alexander's enduring legacy can be seen in the development of a range of coins which were either issued by Alexander himself, or were issued by his descendants and successors. The design of these coins could include Alexander's name or imagery closely associated with Alexander, to make use of his important status.

A great number of coins survive from antiquity, having been produced in enormous quantities from durable materials for use in everyday life. They are invaluable both as an historical and as a cultural record, and can convey critical information about political power and change. The discovery of coins far from their original place of production helps us to develop a map of ancient trade, while the imagery on coins can detail the development of art from simple geometric designs through to highly realistic portraiture.
