Augmented Reality (AR) promises to seamlessly blend physical and digital worlds, yet interacting with most AR systems still depends on abstract gestures or dedicated controllers that feel disconnected from the tasks which are well suited to this medium. This PhD project explores how everyday artefacts can be utilised as intuitive interaction tools for AR experiences.
The project will develop an empirically grounded taxonomy of object properties that determine the suitability of artefacts for AR interaction. Through user studies, interaction design research, and computer vision techniques, the successful candidate will investigate how object characteristics such as shape, physical composition, and affordances can support natural interaction with digital content. The research will also explore how these properties can be identified using current sensing technologies and utilised in future AR systems.
Located at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction, Augmented Reality, Computer Vision, and Interaction Design, the research will generate foundational knowledge with future applications across various domains such as design, engineering, education and entertainment.

Key qualifications and skills
We are seeking a creative and curious PhD candidate with strong technical, analytical and communication skills, excited to work at the intersection of people, everyday artefacts, and emerging immersive technologies.
The ideal candidate will have a background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Design, or a related field, and experience in programming (e.g., Unity, C#, Python) with a strong interest in immersive technologies, user-centred design, and natural interaction techniques.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate research experience through a Master's thesis, publication record, industry R&D project, or equivalent research activity. They should further have experience in one or more of the following areas:
- HCI and interaction design
- AR/MR/XR development
- Computer vision and object recognition
- User studies and experimental research
Does the project come with funding
Per annum: Stipend of $32,650 plus PhD tuition fees. The project also has up to $5,000 available for research expenses across the duration of the degree.
Funding duration: Three years (360 points)
