China Scholarship Council PhD Scholarship

04 March 2024

The UC-China Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship fosters research collaboration between UC and Chinese universities. UC invites applications from Chinese postgraduate students to undertake doctoral study with support from UC and the CSC. Successful students are based in Christchurch and undertake original research.

HOW TO APPLY

Are you a high-achieving student from China looking to pursue a PhD at a world-class university? The University of Canterbury (UC) offers an exciting opportunity for students to study under the China Scholarship Council (CSC) Scholarship Programme. This collaboration between UC and the CSC aims to foster long-term research partnerships with Chinese universities while supporting your academic journey.

These scholarships are only available for new applicants to the UC Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme.

CSC Scholarship benefits

As a recipient of the CSC Scholarship, you’ll receive:

  • A living allowance set by the Chinese government for the duration of the scholarship (up to 4 years).
  • Return airfare to New Zealand by the most economical route.
  • Student visa fee coverage.
  • Health insurance for international students.

Before you apply:

In order to apply to the CSC, you will need an offer of place from UC and a letter confirming that the University has agreed to a fee scholarship for up to 4 years if the CSC scholarship is awarded.

It can take 4-8 weeks (minimum) for an offer of place to be issued so it is important that you apply before the end of December. The UC Graduate School is available to assist you to navigate this process, if required.

CSC Application Process

  1. Apply to UC for Admission. Here is a link to the UC admission process and requirements.  If you have this information already you can start your PhD application online via myUC.

  2. When applying, clearly indicate your interest in being considered for the CSC Scholarship. This will allow us to prioritise your application.

  3. Successful applicants will receive an Offer of Place letter and a tuition fee waiver letter. The Offer of Place and fee waiver letter are required to be submitted as part of your CSC application.

  4. Applications for the CSC Scholarship should made directly to the CSC at www.csc.edu.cn. Applications open in March each year and applicants are notified of the outcome in May.

Be mindful of deadlines. Applying early ensures sufficient time for UC to process your PhD application before the CSC deadline. Incomplete or last-minute applications may not be processed in time. Please complete your PhD applications before the end of December.

Confirm your start date and apply for NZ student visa:

If your CSC application is successful, the CSC will advise you and the University of Canterbury. The University of Canterbury will then contact you to confirm your start date and to help you to complete your enrolment in the PhD programme once you have arrived at UC. You will also need to apply for the relevant visa to study in New Zealand
