Abstract
The potential of periglacial landforms in the context of palaeoclimatic interpretation seems without much controversy, mainly due to their connection to climate-driven permafrost conditions for formation and morphodynamic activity. But such utilisation involves some specific challenges. Many periglacial landforms represent transitional processes of certain duration or diachronous events rather than clearly defined single events. This complicates their palaeoclimatic interpretation along high risks of postdepositional disturbance. A second major challenge is the reliable application of dating techniques, in particular of boulder-dominated landforms. Schmidt-hammer exposure-age dating (SHD) has, however, been successfully utilised for obtaining numerical age information of periglacial and permafrost-related landforms during the past years. In this talk, the results of investigations on patterned ground and related features in Jotunheimen (Central South Norway) will be presented. Among other findings, the common interpretation of activity/inactivity of large patterned ground landforms as palaeoclimatic indicators for the presence of permafrost will be critically evaluated.
