Conditions of using a field station

22 September 2026

UC's field stations are mainly used to provide accommodation and laboratory facilities for UC teaching field courses and site-specific postgraduate or staff research. Check out the conditions of using a field station.

HOW TO APPLY

Conditions of use

UC field stations are shared facilities that support teaching, research and learning. Unless specifically arranged in advance, users should not expect exclusive access to a field station during their stay.

All visitors are required to comply with University of Canterbury policies, procedures and regulations while using field station facilities.

Accommodation fees are kept as low as possible on the understanding that users contribute to the care of shared spaces. Guests are expected to leave facilities clean and tidy and to assist in maintaining communal areas. Additional cleaning or maintenance charges may be incurred where facilities are not left in an appropriate condition.

Minimum stay requirements, conditions for daytime use, and arrangements for conferences or group events may apply at some locations.

The University reserves the right to amend or cancel bookings where facilities are required for essential University of Canterbury teaching, research or operational activities. Every reasonable effort will be made to avoid changes to confirmed bookings.

Cass and Westport field stations

The Cass and Westport Field Stations primarily support University of Canterbury field-based teaching, research and postgraduate study. These facilities provide access to unique natural environments that are integral to many UC programmes and research projects.

When not required for University activities, accommodation and facilities may be available to schools, tertiary institutions, researchers and community groups with educational, scientific or natural history interests.

Mt John Observatory, Takapō

The University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory is primarily a research facility supporting astronomical observation and related scientific activities. Accommodation is generally not available to visitors, teaching groups or researchers who are not undertaking site-specific work.

Kaikōura accommodation

The University of Canterbury maintains a small amount of accommodation in Kaikōura to support field-based research and teaching activities. Priority is given to researchers and students undertaking work that requires access to the Kaikōura region.

Priority of use

University of Canterbury field stations exist to support site-specific teaching, research and learning. Priority is therefore given to University activities that require access to these locations.

External bookings are welcomed where capacity allows and where proposed activities are compatible with the purpose and operation of the facilities.
