Historical novel set along the Kaikoura coast. Starts with a Ngai Tahu family living at Kaikoura in the early 1800's. Features Te Rauparaha's raids through shore-based whaling, Irish immigrants and English pastoral settlers through to the present day. Earthquakes formed the coastal ranges and the last chapter features an earthquake with damage to both Kaikoura town and Christchurch. Much of the damage caused was in line with that of the recent earthquakes. The book was inspired by field trips in geography and geology with Prof. George Jobberns of Canterbury University.
