‘Connon girls’ were well known in the 20th century Canterbury College/UC community as the residents of Helen Connon Hall, a hostel for female students that operated from 1918 to 1974. Photos and interview excerpts from more than 30 residents provide a lively account of their experiences of university and hall life, which was highly regulated, unlike that of their male counterparts and in contrast to modern students. The book also explores the social background and later careers of these ‘Connon girls.’
