George studied at Canterbury from 1967 to 1969. completing a BA in French and German and meeting his wife, Hilary. He spent his professional career in the New Zealand Treasury and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, holding a number of positions in New Zealand and overseas including as Ambassador in Mexico City and The Hague. He is involved with a number of committees and activities in Wellington.
