Te Rā Tūhura | Discovery Day is the first of an annual series of events encouraging students to explore their study options at university. The name ‘Tūhura’ means to discover, disclose, bring to light, unearth, open up, explore and investigate.
The day is designed to help students identify connections between their current subject choices and degree options at UC through a number of information sessions and activities. This year, students from 26 Canterbury schools were welcomed onto campus and attended lectures on a range of diverse topics such as ‘the truth about fake news’, ‘what if nutrition could treat mental illness?’ and ‘the secret lives of trees’.
UC Māori and Pacific welcomes were led by Te Waka Pākākano | the Office of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor Māori, Pacific and Equity and introduced students to the specialist academic and wellbeing support available at UC.
Te Rā Tūhura information sessions on offer reflect the diverse and topical curriculum available at UC, addressing subjects such as climate change, artificial intelligence and young leadership, while showcasing the pathways available to students to create, contribute and build a better society.
The event was also an opportunity to tour the UC campus and learn about the differences between school and university. Attendance at this year’s event was up by 11% from 2019, reflecting an increased interest in domestic study and for Waitaha students, the chance to explore world class accessible education right on their doorstep. The variety of study options on offer, as well as flexible degree programmes, showed students university is the starting point on their journey towards achieving their career goals.
