The recent violent uprising in New Caledonia is related to the Nouméa Accords and full electoral participation of thousands of recent immigrants.
UC Senior Lecturer in the School of Educational Studies and Leadership Dr David Small, who has been researching New Caledonia for decades, recalls visiting New Caledonia in 1983 and the intense anger and frustration of the time.
Dr Small discusses why this time is different, and decades of political failure will make this uprising hard to contain.
