PRMIA Accreditation of UC Programmes
Risk management skills are a highly sought-after commodity in the financial sector, particularly since the global financial crisis. In recognition of this, the Department of Economics and Finance offers its students the opportunity to obtain the professional qualification of Professional Risk Manager (PRM). This programme is accredited by the Professional Risk Managers' International Association (PRMIA), the principal global forum for the promotion of sound risk management standards and practices. The PRM™ is the leading certification for risk managers, with public endorsements from top universities and businesses.
Exam and course structure
To achieve the PRM Designation, candidates are required to pass four exams:
EXAM I: Finance Theory, Financial Instruments and Markets
EXAM II: Mathematical Foundations of Risk Measurement
EXAM III: Risk Management Practices
EXAM IV: Case Studies, PRMIA Standards of Best Practice, Conduct and Ethics, Bylaws
UC graduates will be exempted from PRM Exams I and II if they receive at least a B grade in all of the following courses:
EXAM I:
FINC 203 – Financial Markets, Institutions and Instruments
FINC 301 – Corporate Finance: Theory and Policy
FINC 305/FINC 616 – Financial Modelling
FINC 311 – Investments
FINC 312 – Derivative Securities
FINC 331 – Financial Economics
FINC 344 – International Finance
FINC 623 – Advanced Derivative Securities
FINC 629 – Credit Risk Management
EXAM– II:
ECON 213 – Introduction to Econometrics
ECON 324 – Econometrics
FINC 623 – Advanced Derivative Securities
Any of the above 300-level courses can be taken as a FINC610 course and will qualify for PRMIA's recognition.
These courses can be completed in conjunction with the department’s undergraduate (BCom, BSc, GradDipSci ) and graduate (BCom (Honours), MCom, MSc, MAFE, PGDipSc) programmes in finance.
