Applications are now open for the 2023 MBA study tour to Singapore!

MBAD671-23T2 is an MBA elective course that focuses on international strategy and business in an international context. The course runs in T2 and includes a study tour of approximately one week to Singapore to gain first-hand experience in this highly competitive market.

Students work in groups to create or enhance an international strategy for a New Zealand-based client, focusing on the Singapore market and/or using Singapore as a gateway to elsewhere in Asia. During our trip to Singapore, we will visit organisations that are related to your client’s business.

You will observe differences in business practices and solutions in New Zealand and Singapore, reflect on what is behind those differences and learn best practices. We will also visit the NZTE and the New Zealand High Commission in Singapore to hear about their observations about the challenges and opportunities for New Zealand firms in Singapore.

We also aim to meet with UC alumni, KEA network members and MBA students from our partner universities in Singapore to give you ample opportunities to gain insights and enhance your international network.

Eligibility: By approval of the MBA Director. Normally, students would be at least one year into the MBA programme with at least a B+ GPA at the end of Term 3 2022. Selections will be made based on GPA and personal statement. The study tour course is also open to MBA alumni.

Dates: The course runs through Term 2 2023 with classes on Tuesday night. It includes pre-tour classes and business visits in May-July 2023, a study tour to Singapore in 16-24 July and a post-tour class on 8 August.

Assessments: Working in groups, students will develop a supply chain strategy (50%) and present the strategy to a client (20%). Students will also participate in a CQ (cultural intelligence) module that includes pre and post-tour CQ assessment, an individual development plan and a self-reflection report (30%).

Food: Singapore is the capital of high-quality street food and casual restaurants and eating out is cheap. About S$30 (NZ$36) per day should be sufficient for three meals. Total: approximately $300 or more for fancier fare.
