Advisory Board to AVC Māori, Pacific and Kā Waimaero

The Advisory Board to the Assistant Vice-Chancellor Māori, Pacific and Equity and the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre provides advice and discusses pertinent issues and matters of paramount concern to Māori activities, processes, and practices at UC. The functions of the advisory board:

  • To help the University of Canterbury develop a deep understanding of and maintain a strong commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • To contribute on the appropriateness of relevant sections of the Strategic Plan, profile and Council policies in terms of the university’s aspirations to partner with Māori and support Māori development.
  • To advise on the progress and achievements of the university towards its strategic objectives for Māori. Reports prepared on such matters for the University Council (usually by the Vice-Chancellor and Amokapua Pākākano | Assistant Vice-Chancellor Māori, Pacific and Equity) will be referred to the Advisory Board for comment and advice.
  • To contribute on academic matters which have direct relevance to Māori curriculum content, delivery and research.
  • To provide advice to the University on political and cultural matters that affect Christchurch and wider Māori communities.

Membership is as follows:

  • Ngāi Tūāhuriri representative 
  • Ngāi Tahu representative 
  • Ngā Mataa Waka representative 
  • Director Kā Waimaero | Ngāi Tahu Research Centre 
  • Vice-Chancellor 
  • Amokapua Pākākano | Assistant Vice-Chancellor Māori, Pacific and Equity
  • PVC Education 
  • Head of School, Aotahi School of Māori and Indigenous Studies

The Amokapua Pākākano | Assistant Vice-Chancellor Māori, Pacific and Equity will invite appropriate internal and external parties to Advisory Board meetings as necessary to provide additional advice and expertise. Meetings are held several times per year.
