Research Interests

Great South Basin (GSB) is one of the frontier basins in NZ. There is a working petroleum system in the basin, as suggested by sub-commercial gas-condensate discoveries and gas shows. However, no significant discovery has been made. To evaluate petroleum potential of the basin it is important to understand the tectonic evolution and petroleum system in greater detail. This project will investigate the “Tectonic evolution and petroleum system development in the Great South Basin”. It will constrain the distribution and timing of Cretaceous faulting associated with Gondwana breakup, distribution of source, reservoir and seal rocks through time, analyse the effect of polygonal faults on seal integrity and evaluate key risks associated with the petroleum system.
