Six university rescuers to receive awards

Six University of Canterbury rescuers will receive Civil Defence Emergency Management long service awards on campus tomorrow night.

Six University of Canterbury rescuers will receive Civil Defence Emergency Management long service awards on campus tomorrow night.

They are David van Leeuwen, Graeme Bull, Graham Furniss, Heather Thomas, Mark Andrews and Mark Warren. The awards will be presented by David Coetzee, the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management’s national controller.

Those receiving awards were part of the university’s rescue team which was deployed to the red zone following the February 22, 2011 earthquake and they worked alongside the Taiwanese special taskforce to search for earthquake victims, as well as carrying out residential door-to-door checks.
