Thirteen University of Canterbury alumni have been recognised in the 2013 New Year Honours List.

Thirteen University of Canterbury alumni have been recognised in the 2013 New Year Honours List.

Among the list of distinguished alumni is former MP Rodney Hide, who was awarded the Queen’s Service Order (QSO) in recognition of his services as a Member of Parliament. Hide graduated from UC in 1979 with a degree in botany.

Alumnus Professor David Teece was awarded the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to New Zealand-United States Relations.

Dr Mary Dawson was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to the Girl Guides and the community, while Vicki Hyde was also awarded the honour for services to science.

Four alumni were made Officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM): Gavin Bishop for services to children’s literature; Emeritus Professor Glynnis Cropp for services to research in the humanities; Mary Devine for services to business and former UC staff-member Dr Rod Syme for services to athletics and science.

Three alumni were awarded Queen’s Service Medals (QSM): Michael Andrewes for services to opera, Ashwin Gulab for Services to the Indian community and Michael Jacka for services as a geotechnical engineer.

Group Captain Athol Forrest was awarded the New Zealand Distinguished Service Medal (DSD) in recognition of services to the New Zealand Defence Force.
