Sir William Wakeham, president of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and former vice-chancellor of Southampton University, UK, was on campus to give an address to the local IChemE chapter about the challenges facing IChemE in an era of rapid change and globalisation.
Sir William told the audience about the dilemmas and opportunities facing an Institution, which is required to qualify and meet the expectations of chemical and process engineers from a diverse range of backgrounds, in a changing industry landscape, and across five continents.
This is the first time the President of IChemE has visited the department said Dr Peter Gostomski, Head of Department Chemical and Process Engineering.
“It was a great opportunity for chemical and process engineering staff and students to hear and meet an international leader in chemical engineering and to learn more about IChemE,” said Dr Gostomski.
“We were very lucky to have such a prominent chemical engineer visit.”
Sir Wakeham told the students that chemical engineers have an important role in helping society to solve the big problems of the 21st century such as sustainable energy, clean water, health and food security.
He will be writing an article for The Chemical Engineer the flagship journal for IChemE members describing his visit.
“This will help in communicating to the international community that chemical and process engineering at Canterbury is still thriving after the events earlier in the year,” said Dr Gostomski.
