Local Lives records the past of one of the oldest inner suburbs of Christchurch. Addington was well-known throughout New Zealand as home to a railway workshops, a stock sale yards, a show grounds, a race course, a prison and an immigration barracks. The histories of all these institutions are covered in the book. More importantly, Addington was home to one of the largest and most interesting working class communities in New Zealand.  The book is an account of the lives of the people who have called Addington home over more than 150 years and discusses the place of community and class in New Zealand history.
