The Mahere Oranga | Wellbeing Implementation Plan 2020–2024 sets out a range of actions intended to advance wellbeing at UC. Recognising that people are our greatest asset, work towards the plan began in 2019 when staff and students were invited to take part in a survey looking at wellbeing at UC. Just under 1000 responses were received, and these provided valuable insights into how staff and students not only experience their own wellbeing, but also what services they think are needed, and how UC is doing to provide wellbeing support.

What is wellbeing?

Wellbeing is a challenging concept to define, but it is often said to be connected with feeling satisfied and happy, having one's needs met, being free to pursue goals, and experiencing good living conditions. Putting it really simply, wellbeing can be thought of as 'feeling good and functioning well.'

What does the plan do?

Adopting the lens of Te Pae Māhutonga, the plan focuses energy on actions in six key areas that are represented by whetū, or stars:

  • Toiora: Healthy Lifestyles
  • Waiora: Physical Environment
  • Te Oranga: Participation in Society
  • Mauriora: Cultural Identity
  • Ngā Manukura: Community Leadership
  • Te Mana Whakahaere: Autonomy

Through this structured programme of improvement, the plan will help support UC to be a place where individuals are empowered with the knowledge and resources they need to nurture their wellbeing.
