This course will explore some of the major ideas and events that have shaped world history since 1945. The course focuses on post-war decolonisation and the making of new nations. It looks at the impact of communism on Europe and Asia and on global politics. We also consider the more recent political and military pressures of globalisation and the hunt for resources and the uses of terrorism and non-violent means as ways of creating political change. The course is truly global covering the Middle East and Asia as well as Europea and America. It asks the question whether globalisation is bringing the world into greater unity - or whether globalisation is tearing the world apart.
