Description

Topics covered: baseband transmission, signal space, digital modulation and reception, equalization, communications systems, error control coding and networking.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe upcoming 5G communications technologies and propose ways they could be applied in the real world.
2. Describe basic networking concepts and techniques.
2. Encode and decode block and convolutional codes.
3. Analyze the distance and error correction capabilities of error control codes.
4. Represent the convolutional codes in terms of state diagrams and trellises.
5. Perform modulation and demodulation using PSK, QAM and FSK.
6. Calculate the error probability of various modulations including PSK and QAM.
7. Describe an OFDM system.
8. Baseband pulse transmission including dealing with band-limited channels using Nyquist pulse shaping and equalisation.
9. Spectral and error-rate analysis of baseband transmission and reception.
