Description

Special Topic

Special Topic:   Environmental Engineering Design Project
(Offered in parallel with a course at the University of Auckland led by Naresh Singhal)

The design project in Environmental Engineering will showcase the student's broad knowledge of the varied aspects of environmental science and engineering through a Preliminary Design and Report for an engineering project. Student teams will undertake a level of preliminary investigation performed before the detailed design. At the end of the course, each team will deliver a professional quality preliminary design report and support this with an oral presentation and interview. Individuals in each group of 4-5 students will undertake complementary but distinct activities to cover site assessment, sampling and laboratory analysis, modelling, impact assessment, cost analysis, iwi interests, and regulatory aspects. Each team will act as a group of consulting engineers undertaking an open-ended preliminary investigation and design with the assistance of technical specialist advisors and a staff member as your nominal client.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the student should be able to:
1. Apply environmental engineering concepts to a previously unstudied application.
2. Perform environmental engineering calculations at a level expected in practice.
3. Produce outputs to expected standards of professionalism and client focus.
4. Work effectively within a diverse team.

Prerequisites

Subject to approval of the Head of Department.

Timetable Note

The course will be remotely for UC CNRE students.  UC and UA students will work together in teams.

This course will be taught online with Mark Milke holding tutorials in his office.

Course Coordinator

Mark Milke

Lecturers

Dr Cassandra Billiau (Watercare Services Ltd, University of Auckland) , Dr Rob Fullerton (BECA) , Associate Professor Naresh Singhal (University of Auckland) and Matt James Watson

The project for 2022 is the design of treatment processes for a winery effluent. The proposed design should minimise energy usage while maximising opportunities for resource recovery and delivery of effluent water quality. Students will present a design report and presentation that would consider:

 Issues (e.g., seasonality)
 Evaluation of treatment options (incl. a comparison of their strengths and weaknesses)
 Applicable standards and design performance criteria
 Conceptual design of treatment (or management) options (incl. constructability) for the liquid, solid and gaseous waste streams
 Assessment of impacts
 Safety in design (i.e., integrates hazard identification and risk assessment methods early in the design)
 Stakeholder engagement plan

Indicative Fees

Domestic fee $1,133.00

* All fees are inclusive of NZ GST or any equivalent overseas tax, and do not include any programme level discount or additional course-related expenses.
