Description

Scarcity, exchange and trade. Market analysis and policy. Consumer choice theory. Theory of the firm. Imperfect competition. Externalities and public goods. (ECON199 is offered under the STAR programme for secondary school students. Secondary School students only may enrol in this course.)

Timetable Note

ECON199 is a whole year course (20 February - 11 November). Course material will be delivered via LEARN, UC's e-learning platform (http://learn.canterbury.ac.nz/). There will be 35 video lectures, one per week commencing Thursday 23 February 2012. There will also be opportunities for online discussions.

ECON199 is a STAR distance course designed for economics scholarship students. It includes content that is part of the NCEA Level 3 economics syllabus.

The successful completion of ECON199 will aid a student's scholarship exam preparation and as Economics is a major subject in UC's Commerce, Arts and Science degrees, this 15 point course can be credited towards a BCom, BA or BSc at UC and other NZ university degrees on application (credit is subject to the availability of a comparable microeconomics course at the relevant institution).

Assessment

Assessment will include online quizzes, a mid-course test, a final exam and scholarship tutorials aimed at preparing students for the Economics Scholarship Examination. The mid-course test and exam will require participating schools to provide an invigilator who will be reimbursed with a $50 petrol/supermarket voucher for his/her time (one voucher for each assessment).

Notes

STAR students (both domestic and international) - please note the course fee is NZ$460 (not NZ$655 or NZ$$2,888.00, these fees are for non-STAR students). It is expected that most students will be funded through the Ministry of Education STAR programme. However, STAR courses are open to all secondary school students including international students, provided schools/students meet the course costs through other means. Schools will be invoiced in June 2012.
