Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
On-line Test 26 Apr 2013 20% On-line Test
Written Assignment 15 May 2013 40% Written Assignment
Final Examination 40% Final Examination

There are three pieces of assessment for this course:

1. On-line Test (Weight: 20%)
The purpose of this test is to assess your understanding and comprehension of key change management concepts and principles. The online test will cover Lectures 2-9. Both lectures and the readings will be assessed. The test is on April 26th (Friday).

2. Written Assignment (Weight: 40%)
Eve Gardner has just taken over as the Chief Executive of Evon International – a multinational corporation that manufactures and markets cosmetics, soaps, detergents and other homecare products. The company is just an average performer in its industry lagging behind the market leader in profitability, market share and return on assets. The company headquarters is in London and it has operations in more than 100 countries. In the corporate head office in London, the Vice-Presidents of the following divisions report to Eve: (a) Marketing & Sales, (b) Manufacturing & Logistics, (c) Research & Development, (d) Finance, (e) Human Resources, & (f) Corporate Services. Each division operates as an almost independent entity, with its own budget, resources and strategy.

Eve is thinking about launching a change initiative but is not sure how to proceed. She is considering various options such as:

• What should the objective of the change initiative be? What should the change focus on? Should she focus on cost cutting to improve profitability or something else?
• What should be the scope of the change initiative? Should it be organization-wide or should it focus on divisions that have more problems?
• Should she set up a separate change management team and delegate the task of implementing change to them?
• Should she keep everyone informed or keep it confidential so as not to make people anxious? How should she communicate the purpose and the process?
• What should be the structure and process for managing the change?
• Should she get personally involved or delegate the task to her divisional vice-presidents?
• What would ensure that the change is successful?

You have been engaged as a change management expert to advise Eve on how to launch and manage a change initiative. Prepare a written document for her that addresses all the issues above and any others that she might not have considered. The report should conform to the following:

• It should NOT exceed 1500 words in length.
• It should be in 12-point font (Times New Roman/Garamond/Georgia).
• It should be double-spaced with one inch (2.54 cm) margins on all sides.
• All pages must be numbered.
• There should be a word count at the bottom of the title page, which should be separate and contain your name and ID.
• The first page of the document, before the title page, should be a cover sheet that can be downloaded from Learn.
• Any information or ideas that are used in the document from sources other than the readings must be referenced in a separate Reference Page. References are not included in the word count.  References must conform to the APA format. See library website for useful resources on the APA format here: http://library.canterbury.ac.nz/services/ref/apa/index.shtml
• Your document MUST have an Introduction and a Conclusion. Anyone reading just the Introduction and Conclusion of your report should be able to grasp what is said in the document.
• Each separate section of the report should have its own sub-title.
• Please proof-read your assignment before submission. Any grammatical or spelling errors will lower your marks.
• You must submit a hard copy and upload another copy on Learn, which will be checked for plagiarism using Turnitin.

3. Final Exam (Weight: 40%)
The final exam will cover lectures 10-19. Both lectures and the text will be assessed. Model questions will be provided in the class and on LEARN.

The marks for each piece of assessment may be standardized before a final grade is determined.
