Description

This course introduces key principles, concepts, and theories related to the management and use of Information Systems to support organisational aims. The course covers information technology concepts, IS and business strategy, IS applications, IS acquisition, governance, IS evaluation, IS and biculturalism.

Information technology plays an important role in business and society.  This course examines how businesses use information systems and technologies to deliver business value and support business strategy, to improve connections with stakeholders, create better business processes, and enhance decision-making.  This course introduces key principles, concepts, and theories related to the management and use of Information Systems to support organisational aims.  The course covers information technology concepts, IS and business strategy, IS applications, IS acquisition, governance and evaluation, IS and biculturalism.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of this course the student should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of technology components of business information systems (IS) such as hardware, software and network communications.
  • Describe and apply key database concepts to organising, managing and using data in a database
  • Discuss the role of specific IS applications such as ERP systems, CRM systems, and e-business applications.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of IS for competitive advantage, assess levels of IS strategic alignment and identify and recommend strategic IS opportunities based on a specific context.
  • Recognise and reflect on the impact of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand on the IS field
  • Demonstrate an understanding of alternative approaches to systems development and acquisition and be able to make decisions on the most suitable approach for a specific context.
  • Discuss control concepts and approaches used to govern the IS function and evaluate the effectiveness of IS.
