This course explores concepts of health and well-being as they relate to culture, providing a critical approach to understanding health status, approaches and movements within Aotearoa/New Zealand. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the role and importance of culture in a broad sense, drawing upon Maori health as a case of the inter-relationships, principles and strategies for action.
HLTH409 aims to: Increase students’ knowledge of key concepts, theories and frameworks relating to health and culture;Enrich and increase students’ knowledge and understanding of Māori health issues, and enhance their capacity for sophisticated, in-depth analysis;Provide students with structured opportunities to develop skills in textual analysis, writing, communication and reflective practice.Upon successful completion of HLTH409, students will be able to: 1. Describe and discuss key concepts and theories pertaining to health and culture;2. Apply theory critically to analyse historical and contemporary Māori health developments; 3. Critically analyse and evaluate a range of health- and/or culture-focused texts;4. Reflect on personal and professional experiences in terms of health and cultural theories/ frameworks gained from the course, in order to generate insight, critical awareness and/or inform future action;
