Engineering within planetary boundaries. Social, cultural, and economic factors. Risk and systems. Engineering ethics. Case studies of mitigation and adaptation options.
The course will cover: global environmental changes with a focus on climate change; ethics and biculturalism; sustainability and resilience; risk analysis; and strategies for addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation. The approach of the course will be to define these concepts and issues to provide a sound theoretical and factual foundation for students to advance to the 3rd Professional Year. Throughout the delivery of Sustainable Engineering for a Changing Climate, connections to subsequent 3rd Professional Year elective subjects will be made explicit so that students will see pathways to different disciplines that address aspects of sustainability and resilience, including climate mitigation and adaptation. These topics, along with essential ethical and bicultural concepts, will also provide also the key foundations for design solutions to be explored in the 3rd Professional Year Capstone Design Project, and the 3rd Professional Year Research Project.

The Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering recognises that its graduates need to be equipped with foundational knowledge of the major issues confronting global civilisation over the 21st century, among which climate change, population increase, economic and societal change. Further, students need to understand explicitly how their engineering skills translate into addressing these issues for the sustainability and betterment of their own careers and organisations they will work for, and for wider society. Sustainable Engineering for a Changing Climate will provide such a foundation and array of pathways for the Civil and Natural Resources Engineering 2nd Professional Year cohort.
