This course extends the requirements of TEPP370 so that students take a greater role in planning and teaching a sequence of lessons, building towards teaching a unit of work with at least one class. Students continue to take an increased responsibility for class management including corrective management of students. This course requires the students to assume responsibility for all aspects of teaching a unit of work at different class levels. These responsibilities include formative and summative assessment of learning, scaffolding of learning over time and attending to the learning needs of diverse students within a class. The teaching practice portfolio includes critical reflection about their teaching that takes account of a range of evidence of student learning. The focus is also on more interactive teaching strategies within both whole class and student activity. Each student's teaching practice portfolio includes critical evaluation and reflection of their teaching. Expected outcomes are described as a set of competencies that are assessed by associate teachers and college lecturers.
On the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:1. Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour in a school setting.2. Form constructive professional relationships with colleagues and students.3. Demonstrate an understanding and use of school and classroom routines and procedures.4. Prepare episodic lesson plans that are curriculum specific based on clearly achievable learning outcomes.5. Prepare and present lessons that cater for a range of abilities and that ensure continuity and progression of learning. 6. Demonstrate sound knowledge of the content, skills and processes of the area(s) being taught.7. Demonstrate familiarity with the resources available in the school and its environment and manage teaching resources, materials and equipment.8. Demonstrate skills in using a variety of communication and presentation techniques and technologies.9. Demonstrate the ability to give clear instructions, directions and explanations.10. Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment.11. Demonstrate the effective use of appropriate class management techniques.12. Develop and employ a range of questioning skills.13. Employ a range of teaching strategies appropriate to the subject or topic.14. Apply the principles of assessment and assessment procedures appropriate to curriculum content and level and record and evaluate assessment results.15.Actively reflect on their own performance and act on feedback from colleagues, University staff and students.16.Understand and use Tikanga and Te Reo as appropriate.17. Complete and organise all practicum documentation in a professional manner and communicate effectively with mentors using professionally appropriate language conventions.

Competency-based. A balance of evidence approach is used to assess students competencies related to teaching practice criteria.Grading for Teaching Practice is Pass / Fail.
Participation in the full seven weeks teaching practice is a requirement.
Students are required to self evaluate their practice
Criteria are assessed by both University staff and associate teachers in schools
Teaching practice assessment is conducted during practice through observation and a final report. Student portfolios support this assessment.
Students who have not met all criteria will be required to demonstrate that they can subsequently met the criteria
Where for reasons beyond their control, students are prevented from completing an assessment or suffer significant impairment, they may apply for what is known as “special consideration”. University of Canterbury Special Consideration provisions may apply to impaired performance, non-completion of assessment items, and to late discontinuation (withdrawal) from a course.
